Education Law by State

The go to place for any issue having to do with education across the nation

Every education system in the nation runs on two layers of law: the education code the legislature wrote, and the administrative regulations the state board and department wrote under it. This page puts the official text of both layers — plus the department of education that administers them — in one place for all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories.

It is built for the people who have to work with these rules every day: teachers and administrators checking what the rule actually says, journalists verifying a claim before it prints, advocates and families preparing for a meeting, and anyone who would rather read the law itself than somebody's summary of it. Beside each jurisdiction's official links you will find our own Regulations, Section by Section audio walkthroughs — plain-English readings of the regulations, one chapter at a time — as each is published.

Please note: Links go to the official text, which controls. Our episode walkthroughs are plain-English explanations, not legal advice.

About These Links

* Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee publish the official text of their codes through LexisNexis free public access rather than on a state server; the links above go to the official state page — or, for Arkansas, the official LexisNexis container for the Arkansas Code Annotated — that provides that access.

† The U.S. Virgin Islands' official code access is the LexisNexis Virgin Islands Code portal endorsed by the territory's courts and legislature, and the territory publishes education rules and policies through the Virgin Islands Board of Education. American Samoa publishes no code on a government portal; its Code Annotated and Administrative Code are hosted by the American Samoa Bar Association, the territory's established code host. Both are linked as the territories themselves provide them.

Vermont publishes its State Board of Education rules as individual series documents (the Code of Vermont Rules 22-000 series) rather than on a single portal page; the link above goes to a current series document on the Agency of Education site, from which the full series is published. Maryland's COMAR home announces that the official online home of COMAR moved to regs.maryland.gov in March 2026; the Division of State Documents page linked above carries that transition.

Every link on this page was checked against its official source when the page was built, on October 27, 2026. State sites move pages from time to time; if a link fails, the department of education link in the same row is the fastest route back to the current text. Corrections are welcome at educationacrossthestates@gmail.com.
